TikToker sentenced to 6 years for abusing Museveni and his family
A TikToker in a neighboring country of Uganda has found himself in trouble after recording a video and uploading it on that video platform, hurling insults at President Yoweri Museveni and his family.
According to sources from the country, the teenage youth was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday for disrespecting the country’s leader and his family.
Edward Awebwa pleaded guilty at his own request, before Chief Magistrate Stella-Maris Amabirisi in Mukono.
He was charged with posting a video on TikTok in which he made obscene and derogatory remarks about the Head of State, his wife Janet, and their First Son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the Commander of the UPDF.
A resident of Nama in Mukono District, Awebwa was arrested last week and brought to court where he admitted to all four charges read against him.
The Magistrate sentenced Awebwa to six years for each offense. However, he will serve all four sentences concurrently.
In her ruling, the Magistrate stated that she did not give the suspect a higher punishment due to his young age and the fact that the court did not waste time in handling the case.
The prosecution, led by Janet Kitumbo, had requested a heavier sentence as a deterrent to other youths who continue to misuse social media platforms.
