Who was Justice Majanja?
Appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2011, Justice Majanja served in Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Kisii High Courts.
He also worked in the Commercial and Tax Divisions as well as the Milimani High Court Civil Division.
Justice Majanja specialized in Civil and Commercial Law, engaged in public interest litigation, and served as assisting Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into the Post-Election Violence (Waki Commission).
He was a commissioner at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), chaired the Administration of Justice Committee at JSC, and was a member of the Judiciary Rules Committee.
He presided over the Homa Bay and Migori High Courts and was a member, later Vice-chairperson, of the Judiciary Working Committee on Election Preparations (JWCEP).
On May 28, 2024, he was sworn in as a member of the Judicial Service Commission after being re-elected to represent the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA).
He was first elected to the JSC on May 14, 2019, following the end of Judge Aggrey Muchelule’s five-year term on April 4, 2019.
Before his re-election, Justice Majanja chaired the Human Resource Management Committee and was a member of the Audit Committee.
He also chaired the Governance and Risk Management Committee and the Learning and Development Committee.
Justice Majanja worked for Mohammed and Muigai Advocates and Onyango and Ohaga Advocates before founding Majanja Luseno and Company Advocates in 2007.
He held a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa from the University of Pretoria (2005) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi (1996).
Additionally, he earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1998.
Justice Majanja is remembered for presiding over a three-judge High Court bench that declared President William Ruto’s housing levy unconstitutional in November 2023, alongside justices Christine Meoli and Lawrence Mugambi.
