60-year-old man lynched after killing wife over Sh30
Detectives are investigating a tragic incident in Siaya County where a 60-year-old man allegedly stabbed and killed his wife over a dispute involving Sh30.
The man, identified as Ben Odweso, was subsequently lynched by a mob in Nyalula village, according to police reports.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, July 7, when Odweso allegedly killed his 55-year-old wife, Pamela Anyango, following a disagreement over Sh30.
Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo reported that a relative of the deceased alerted the authorities hours after the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the money in question was meant for a church offering but had gone missing from the house.
Police investigations found that the couple was at home with their adult daughter when the argument began.
Odweso is accused of taking the money and, when confronted, became violent and attacked his wife, killing her on the spot. The daughter escaped and raised the alarm, attracting local residents.
Kimaiyo explained that the couple’s son arrived at the scene to find his father armed with a knife and a metal rod.
Odweso attacked his son, injuring him in the neck and leg. By then, a mob had gathered and stoned Odweso to death.
Odweso was rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The injured son was also taken to the hospital, treated, and discharged. The bodies of Odweso and his wife were taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending autopsies.
Such incidents have been on the rise, prompting calls for amicable conflict resolution.
In a separate incident in Mathare slums, Nairobi, a 25-year-old man was killed in a fight at a changáa den on Sunday. Police reported that Hashim Abdalla was with other revelers when a brawl broke out.
Abdalla was struck in the neck and head, collapsing and dying at the scene. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby MSF Hospital.
Police noted visible injuries on his throat caused by a blunt object. The motive for the fight remains unknown, and the search for the assailants is ongoing.
