Why protests persisted despite withdrawal of controversial Finance Bill
Kenya has seen a week of countrywide protests againstĀ the finance bill that would impose extra taxes on Kenyans.
While President William Ruto dramatically rescinded the bill on Wednesday, June 26th, 2024, demonstrations continued in some areas.
Here are some of the reasons behind the continued protests and the underlying discontent of certain Kenyans.
Loss of life and livelihood
Unfortunately, the protests have killed and injured people. Some Kenyans perceive injustice and demand accountability for the violence.
Deeper economic concerns
The proposed tax increases, however abandoned, exacerbated broader economic concerns for many Kenyans who are already struggling with increased living costs.
Distrust of the Government
Despite public uproar, the early drive for the measure undermined some people’s trust in the government. Protesters may be looking for bigger reforms or a stronger voice in policy decisions.
