NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 19 – Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced that the government has closed 6,931 bars near homes and schools.

In a statement, Omollo indicated that 804 chemists and 761 agrovets have also been shut down in countrywide crackdown.

The PS stated that these are part of interventions aimed at protecting public health and ensure national security.

“County security teams have been empowered to implement the 25 directives including shutting down all unlicensed manufacturers, distilleries, agrovets and chemists within 10 days,” PS Omollo said.

Additionally, he emphasized the government’s determination to eliminate the threat of drugs and illicit alcohol is unwavering, with ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

“We urge the public to actively participate in safeguarding our communities by reporting any establishments within their residential areas to relevant authorities,” PS Omollo noted.

The government’s dedication to eradicating the menace of substance abuse was highlighted on March 6 with a formal declaration, followed by a briefing on March 12 for the majority of alcohol manufacturers regarding the impending vetting process.

Under the leadership of PS Omollo, a multi-agency task force commenced the vetting on March 18, bringing together representatives from various government entities to scrutinize the alcohol manufacturing and distribution network.
