Court orders Junet to pay Sh6mn to Nyali MP Ali over defamation » Capital News
NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25 – High Court has ordered Azimio National Assembly Whip Junet Mohamed to pay Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali Sh6 million in damages in a 2022 defamation suit..
The court in its ruling also instructed the Suna East lawmaker to meet all costs Ali incurred during the proceedings.
The court asserted that Junnet had in 2022 through his X app account (formerly Twitter) posted obscene comments with the name ‘Jicho Pevu’ referring to the Nyali lawmaker, a factor which he claimed tainted his image and his standing in the Islamic faith.
“The tweet portrayed the plaintiff as a hypocrite who professes Islamic faith yet goes against its core teachings. This can largely be deciphered from how the other Twitter users reacted to the impugned tweet,” read the ruling in part.
“In the upshot, I find that the plaintiff proved all the elements of the tort of defamation against the defendant,” it added.
Mohamed in 2022 averred that Ali had an affair with X user named Aoko Otieno a factor that did not augur well with the former media personality.
The Nyali lawmaker had in 2022 in the wake of the tweets served Junet with a demand letter, asking him to retract his tweet.
