Term limit legislative proposal not sponsored by UDA » Capital News
NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 25-Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has told off those alleging that he is being used by the Executive to test the waters on the proposal to extend the term limit of elected leaders to 7 years.
Cherargei asserted that the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2024 which is allegedly before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee is not sponsored by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and by extension, the Executive.
The Nandi Senator also added his amendment bill is not linked to the ongoing law reforms anchored under the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) recommendations.
“I don’t sit in any house leadership, I don’t chair any committee, I don’t sit in national governing council of the party nor do I hold any position in the party to bring perception that I am doing it for the party,” he stated.
Cherargei emphasized that his private bill will offer solutions to the political acrimony that characterize the aftermath of every general election.
‘’My proposal is totally different from the NADCO report, it’s just complimentary to the report and Kenyans will be free to interrogate and amend the bill,” he remarked.
Cherargei said his constitutional amendment bill intending to increase term limits for the President, Governors, Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly to seven years.
The Nandi Senator seeks to have the Senate given veto powers to enable Senators Vet Cabinet Secretaries, Attorney General, Auditor General, Inspector General of the Police, Chief Justice and Judges.
The bill also envisages that the impeachment of Governors and Deputy Governors to be challenged at the Supreme Court only.The Supreme Court is expected make a determination within 30 days.
The Nandi Senator seeks to have the allocation of shareable revenue to counties from the National Treasury increased from 15 percent to 40 percent.
“I didn’t get a chance to present my proposals before the National Dialogue Committee at the Bomas of Kenya and they are all contained in this Bill,”Cherargei stated.
