NCIC summons Mumias East MP Peter Salasya
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya is expected to appear before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) this morning.
According to the Commission, the MP has an ongoing case related to alleged ethnic discrimination and is scheduled to report to the NCIC headquarters at 11:00 a.m
Salasya was charged on May 19 before a Nairobi court with hate speech.
He was accused of ‘stirring’ ethnic hatred between the Luo and Luhya communities by posts made on X on May 10.
The charge sheet stated that the MP intentionally published the words on his X handle, knowing that they were insulting, inciting and calculated to stir up ethnic hatred between the two communities.
The charge sheet stated that the offence was contrary to section 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission Act of 2008.
The commission has warned of a growing wave of political intolerance in Kenya, characterised by personal insults, hate speech, and incitement at public rallies.
Chairperson Samuel Kobia, speaking a fortnight ago, expressed concern over the deteriorating state of political discourse, noting that platforms intended to unite Kenyans have increasingly become breeding grounds for hostility and name-calling.
He emphasised that the Commission will not hesitate to take action against individuals who violate the law, particularly the National Cohesion and Integration Act of 2008.
Several politicians are currently under the NCIC’s radar over allegations of hate speech and incitement.
