Protests: 7 admitted to KNH as Boniface Kariuki’s condition remains critical

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has issued an update on the condition of Boniface Kariuki, a trader who was shot during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Addressing the media on Wednesday, KNH acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. William Sigilai said that Kariuki was referred to the hospital from a clinic within the CBD after sustaining a severe gunshot wound to the head.

He explained that Kariuki was brought in at 3:15 p.m. with a bullet lodged in the left side of his head. A multidisciplinary team, led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Sam Njiru, at 8.30 pm performed a complex and delicate two-hour surgery to remove the bullet.

“Upon arrival at the Accident and Emergency Department, he was critically ill with a gunshot wound to the head, resulting in severe brain injury and excessive bleeding,” said Sigilai.

He said the hospital’s emergency team, led by Dr. Janet Sugut, stabilised the patient and placed him on life support, adding that a CT scan of the brain confirmed that a bullet had struck the left side of his head.

Dr. Sigilai stated that Kariuki’s condition remains critical and that he is still on mechanical ventilation.

“ The patient was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains on mechanical ventilation. While his condition is still critical, he is alive and under close, round-the-clock observation and care by our medical team,” he stated.

16 patients

Additionally, he disclosed that the hospital received 16 other patients with various injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma.

Of these, seven were admitted for further management while nine were treated and discharged.

Two have already undergone surgery, and four more are scheduled for surgical procedures today, Wednesday.

“One other patient remains unidentified, having sustained a skull fracture reportedly from an assault. We commend the swift actions of first responders and the public who ensured the timely referral of casualties to KNH,” he said.

He promised to provide further updates as appropriate with due regard to the privacy and dignity of the patients involved.

“We also acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of our medical staff who continue to respond effectively under high-pressure emergencies. Kenyatta National Hospital remains committed to providing the highest standard of emergency and trauma care”, he said.
