Catholic bishops condemn death in custody, call for transparent probe
The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has condemned the suspicious death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
In a statement issued through its General Secretariat, the Catholic clergy described Ojwang’s death not just as a family tragedy but as a loss that necessitates deeper reflection.
“His death is not just a personal loss to his family, but a painful wound to our national conscience and a reminder of the urgent need for accountability in our justice system,” the statement reads.
The bishops extended their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Albert Ojwang, aligning themselves with the public’s demand for truth and justice.
“Let Albert Ojwang’s name not be added to a growing list of forgotten victims,” the clergy urged.
The Catholic leaders welcomed the directive from the Inspector General of Police to interdict officers linked to the case and emphasized that the investigation must be swift, transparent, and free from interference.
They insisted that no one is above the law, and anyone found culpable must face the full legal consequences.
“Let this not be another case swept under the rug,” they warned.
The Church also appealed to the public to remain calm, peaceful, and prayerful, cautioning against any provocation that could lead to violence or division.
“Our strength is in our unity and our collective demand for justice through lawful means,” the bishops added.
They reminded national institutions that the true test of a just society lies in how it treats its most vulnerable members.
