Housing for All: State crafts plan for diaspora participation in home ownership
The Government of Kenya has embarked on a strategic initiative aimed at integrating Kenyans in the diaspora into the Affordable Housing Programme.
This announcement was made on Thursday following a consultative meeting between Roseline Njogu, the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, and her counterpart in Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga.
According to the two PSs, the latest drive aims to unlock investment from overseas and enable more citizens to own homes back in Kenya.
“The discussions centered on strategies to extend the Boma Yangu initiative to the diaspora community, who have shown strong interest in investing in homes back in Kenya through the programme,” stated a release from the State Department of Diaspora Affairs.
To facilitate the participation of Kenyans living abroad, a dedicated information portal has already been launched.
The meeting was also attended by Jeremiah Simu, Chairperson of the Affordable Housing Programme Board, and Glenns Etyang, a Deputy Director at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
The Affordable Housing Programme is a key pillar of the Kenya Kwanza development agenda and is designed to address the country’s growing urban housing deficit by providing decent, accessible, and dignified homes for all income groups.
