
Weatherman warns of heavy rainfall in parts of the country
The Kenya Meteorological Department is warning of heavy rainfall of more than 20-millimeters in 24 hours beginning tomorrow.
In an advisory the weatherman says the rainfall is expected in Nairobi and parts of the country including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley and Southeastern lowlands on 9 March 2025.
The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30 millimeters in 24 hours and spread to part of Northwestern Kenya beginning on Monday.
The advisory signed by the Director of Kenya Meteorological Department Dr. David Gikungu says that the rainfall is projected to reduce in intensity beginning on 11th March 2025, Tuesday next week.
The areas of concern according to Dr. Gikungu includes the Counties of Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, ElgeyoMarakwet, West-Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Kajiado.
“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility,” says Dr. Gikungu and adds that, “People are advised not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
Last week the Kenya Meteorological Department had indicated that some parts of the country would realise an early onset to the long rains season. According to the Weatherman the Madden Juliane Oscillation which is associated with convective rainfall would be in its second phase of its 60 days cycle.
