Leaders rally behind UDA-ODM pact, call for unity at Chebukati’s memorial

In a powerful display of political unity, Members of Parliament rallied behind the UDA-ODM pact signed this morning at the KICC, Nairobi, underscoring the importance of national cohesion as they honored the legacy of the late former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Speaking during Chebukati’s memorial service, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula emphasized the significance of the historic agreement, urging leaders to put the country’s stability and progress above individual interests.

“Mheshimiwa Rais Ruto na Mheshimiwa Raila Odinga na sisi sote tumeketi, tumeongea, tumekubaliana, Kenya is bigger than an individual. We must unite politically for our economic well-being, for peace, security, and the tranquility of our country. Whenever we come together as leaders, in the unity between Raila, Ruto, and all of us, it makes Kenya a better place for all,” Wetang’ula stated.

His remarks set the tone for a broader call to unity, with leaders from across the political divide affirming that the pact represents a new chapter in Kenya’s governance.

Hon. Caleb Amisi (Saboti, ODM) linked the UDA-ODM agreement to the integrity of Chebukati’s leadership at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), saying,

“Ruto and Raila’s agreement cements Mr. Chebukati’s decision during the last general election.”

Hon. Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) echoed similar sentiments, stressing that choosing development over political hostility does not diminish leadership.

“We are not lesser leaders for choosing to fight for development. We are all beneficiaries of Chebukati’s decisions,” he remarked.

Senator Allan Chesang called for a broader national effort, urging both leaders and citizens to rally behind the country’s development agenda.

“It is not just about working for the government but for our country as well. Unity must translate into action that benefits every Kenyan,” he said.

The agreement between President William Ruto’s UDA party and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s faction marks the culmination of weeks of consultations. The working arrangement will see both parties share political infrastructure and align on national interests, signaling a shift toward collaborative governance.

This move comes at a critical time, as Kenya grapples with economic challenges, governance reforms, and the need for political stability. The leaders at Chebukati’s memorial reinforced that unity at the top can set the tone for peace and economic progress across the country.

As Kenya remembers Wafula Chebukati, who presided over three general elections with unwavering integrity, the message from today’s service was clear, his legacy of principled leadership must be carried forward, not only in electoral matters but in the broader pursuit of national unity and development.
