NAIROBI, KENYA, Apr 14 – A memorial service was held on Sunday at Kabarnet Gardens in Nairobi for June Moi, 60, the daughter of retired President Daniel Moi, who passed away on Thursday.
The service brought together close family members, friends, and various leaders to pay their respects. June will be laid to rest next Thursday in Bahati, Nakuru County.
Presiding over the service was the Presiding Bishop of the African Inland Church Kenya (AIC), Abraham Mulwa, who had also officiated the late President Moi’s service in 2020. In his address, Bishop Mulwa encouraged the family to remain steadfast in hope despite the challenging times they are facing.
Gideon Moi, June’s brother and former Baringo Senator, fondly remembered her as a “lovely human being” and expressed gratitude to all who attended the service, acknowledging their support during this difficult period.
Friends and colleagues described June as a charismatic individual who will be dearly missed.
June’s passing marks the second loss for the family, following the death of her elder brother Jonathan Moi in 2020 due to pancreatic cancer.
As an adopted daughter of President Moi, June’s death was confirmed by the family spokesman on Thursday morning, expressing deep sadness and requesting privacy during this time of grief.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing on of our beloved, June Chebet Moi this morning. At this time of grief, we request for your prayers and privacy as we the family come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” a family spokesman said without providing more details.
President Moi, who led the country for 24 years until his retirement in 2002, was survived by his wife Lena Moi and their eight children—five sons and three daughters, some of whom were adopted.
The family spokesperson issued a statement, mourning June’s passing and requesting prayers for comfort and solace as they come to terms with their loss. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
