Ruto leads nation in mourning departed Baringo Senator William Cheptumo
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning Baringo Senator William Kipkorir Cheptumo, who passed away on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
In a condolence message from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is attending the 38th African Union Summit, the head of state noted that Cheptumo demonstrated exemplary skills in all the leadership roles he held.
“Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service. He was vocal, hardworking and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo,” said President Ruto.
His deputy, Prof. Kindiki Kithure, said the lawmaker would be remembered as adignified leader who chose his words carefully in both public and private conversations.
“Amiable, professional and calm, Senator William Cheptumo brought out the best attributes expected of a cultured lawyer and public officer. He worked hard all the time he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North and later as a Senator. He gave quality representation to his constituents,” said Kindiki.
“A dedicated and longstanding legislator, William Cheptumo’s impact on Kenya’s legislative landscape will be remembered. His unwavering commitment to advancing the development agenda for the people he represented has left an indelible mark,” added Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi mourned Cheptumo’s passing, stating that the country has lost a leader who firmly believed in devolution and seized every opportunity to advocate for its cause and the welfare of Kenyans.
“Senator Cheptumo was a dedicated leader, who took up his legislative responsibilities with unmatched zeal and selflessly articulated the interests of the people of Baringo and Kenyans at large,” he said.
His counterpart in the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, described the departed legislator as a leader, mentor, and friend to many.
“Senator Cheptumo was more than a legislator; he was a man of the people—compassionate, selfless, and deeply devoted to the well-being of those he served. He carried the dreams and hopes of his people with dignity and unwavering commitment, always leading with love, fairness, and wisdom,” he said.
KANU leader Gideon Moi, the former Baringo Senator, extended wishes of grace and fortitude to Cheptumo’s family during this devastating loss.
“Hon. William Cheptumo was an honest, dependable and affable person and leader. On behalf of the Moi family and KANU, we assure Cheptumo’s family of our support at this incredibly difficult time,” said the KANU leader.
Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo stated that the legal fraternity had lost a diligent member.
“The late senator was an astute legal professional with a wealth of experience in legal practice spanning over three decades as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya,” she said.
