Murkomen holds talks with UN official over MSS Mission in Haiti

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen hosted a delegation from the United Nations on Thursday, led by UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, Dr Stephen Jackson.

The agenda for their meeting centred on the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti. The meeting takes place amid uncertainty regarding the peacekeeping initiative due to funding disruptions following a policy shift by the new US government.

Following the meeting, Murkomen noted that the mission has the full support of the United Nations.

“We discussed some of the ongoing partnerships between the government and the international organization. We’re grateful to the UN for providing technical support in training our police officers before they embark on the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti,” Murkomen said

“The UN is also offering crucial support in the implementation of our peace process architecture and police reforms,” he added.

Murkomen’s meeting with the UN delegation comes just days after President William Ruto announced that the US had  exempted the MSS Mission in Haiti from its foreign funding freeze.

Additionally, the Interior CS confirmed that Kenya is collaborating with the UN to shift the management of refugees from a purely humanitarian focus to a development approach, under a programme known as the “Shirika Plan.”

Other initiatives receiving support from the UN locally include the rollout of a digital OB and the development of infrastructure for implementing instant traffic fines.
