Wahome pledges to reclaim all unlawfully acquired public lands

Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has promosed to spearhead a vigorous campaign to reclaim grabbed public land across Kenya, reiterating zero-tolerance policy towards illegal encroachments and fraudulent ownership.

During her visit to the Thika Land Registry in Kiambu County, the CS indicated that her Ministry is currently compiling detailed records of illegally acquired public land to facilitate recovery, beginning with known parcels belonging to schools in Nairobi and Mombasa.

She urged those in possession of fraudulently acquired titles to surrender them or face prosecution.

“Nyali Secondary School’s land has been taken away. People have built on it, but we are going to recover that land,” she stated, noting that several school heads had contacted the Ministry regarding the encroachment on their land parcels.

“To those people holding titles for Nyali Secondary land, listen to me. I am coming to Mombasa to recover the land belonging to Nyali school. We are also working on the documentation to recover land belonging to Lavington Primary School in Nairobi,” she said

Wahome encouraged the public to take action in reclaiming public land through possession while her office, in conjunction with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), moves to document and recover such land.

She urged all school heads to engage her office directly instead of relying on the Land Registries for proper documentation and registration, as she aims to resolve disputes involving land owned by institutions and address cases of attempted grabbing.

Wahome also stated that efforts to seal loopholes within the Lands Ministry, primarily through the digitization of land records, are ongoing.

“Digitization aims to improve transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in land transactions by enabling online land searches, title deed updates, and transfer processes,” said the Lands CS.
