Kenyan troops in Haiti begin post-deployment training
The third contingent of Kenyan police officers deployed to Haiti has commenced post-deployment training to enhance their readiness and effectiveness in addressing local security challenges.
Speaking about the initiative, Superintendent Charles Otieno, the Director of Training at the Multinational Security Support (MSS), said that In-Theatre Training is a vital follow-up to Pre-Deployment Training (PDT).
The trainings are designed to familiarise officers with the unique demands of their mission and clarify their roles.
He said the tactical component of the training focuses on equipping officers with essential operational skills.
“ These include weapon handling, effective use of equipment, tactical combat casualty care, first aid using HFx-Induced kits, and surveillance techniques employing tools such as drones and night vision goggles. These skills are crucial in addressing the complex security environment they face”, he said.
In addition to tactical training, the programme emphasises non-tactical aspects to enhance professionalism among officers.
“These sessions cover critical areas such as human rights education, general health awareness, and psychological counselling. The MSS frequently collaborates with partners like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to deliver these modules effectively,” he said.
Superintendent Otieno explained that the training content is developed based on an analysis of operational challenges and gaps identified through patrol reports, field experiences, and individual assessments.
“This ensures that the training is relevant and addresses the specific needs of the mission,” he added.
Post-training evaluations are conducted to measure the effectiveness of the sessions and ensure that they achieve the desired objectives.
The continuous feedback loop enables MSS to refine its training approach and maintain high standards of readiness and professionalism among its personnel.
The MSS has assured of its commitment to equipping its officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively and uphold the highest levels of professionalism in their mission.
