Man, 73, linked to lover’s murder to wait in jail as doctors’ strike impedes trial » Capital News
NYERI, Kenya, Apr 4 — A 73-year-old man accused of murdering his partner aged 46 will spend another month in remand after his trial failed to proceed over a pending mental assessment.
The ongoing doctors’ strike has delayed Julius Kimani’s mental assessment, a Nyeri Court was told on Thursday.
Kimani is accused of hitting the deceased to death following a scuffle in Nyeri’s Thunguma village.
He reportedly hit his partner with a whip and a mental road when she visited him on March 7 and subsequently surrendered to the police at Thunguma Police Post.
The Prosecution told High Court Judge Maureen Odera that doctors at the Nyeri County Referal Hospital were unavailable for the procedure conducted once every week on Thursdays.
Kimani’s lawyer, Muchiri Wagathoni, however, pressed the court to release the accused on bail given the circumstances of the case.
“Your honour I pray that my client be released on bail [since] we do not know when this strike will end,” said Wagathoni.
The court directed the Probation Department to prepare a pre-bail report for presentation on May 6 when the matter will be mentioned.
