NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 20 – Top police chiefs are among eight arrested over the escape of a serial killer from Gigiri Police Station in what has point to an elaborate inside job.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli said those arrested include the divisional and station commander, all accused of failing to secure the cell leading to the escape of the serial killer alongside 12 others on Monday night.
Collins Jumaisi, a suspect in the Kware murders of young women is said to have escaped the station cells alongside the12 others held over immigration issues.
A police report from the station show that police only discovered the escape during breakfast time.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders considering the officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station,” Masengeli said when he led top police chiefs including Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin to the station.
“I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty last night among them Gigiri Subcounty police commander, OCS, duty officer, duty nco, station guards and report office personnel,” he told reporters.
Investigation show that the inmates cut a wire mesh that forms part of security to the cells and scaled a perimeter wall before escaping.
