Black Panther actress Connie Chiume dies aged 72

Black Panther fans worldwide are mourning the death of actress Connie Chiume, who played the role of a Mining Tribe Elder named Zawavari.

In the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she replaced Zuri (Forest Whitaker) as Wakanda’s Elder Statesman. Chiume’s death was announced by her family on her social media page.

The veteran South African actress was 72. She passed away at Garden City Hospital on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, and her cause of death was not disclosed.

“The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on August 6, 2024.

The Family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”

The actress also appeared in US singer Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film Black is King. The South African government made an official announcement about Chiume’s death.

A message on X.com stated, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”

She is survived by her four children, two sons, and two daughters.
